TOP PICK Doomsday (Rogue Pictures) Part 28 Days Later, part Mad Max and part 300, this apocalyptic thriller takes place 25 years in the future, after a deadly virus has wiped out half the U.K. and turned the other half into people-eating savages. A smokin’ hot special-ops warrior with a robotic eye (Nip/Tuck’s Rhona Mitra) saves the day. The just-released DVD includes a longer and bloodier unrated version of the movie.
CD No End in Sight: The Very Best of Foreigner (Rhino) Of all the faceless rock bands that clogged the airwaves in the late ’70s and early ’80s, Foreigner was the most faceless. More than two decades after its last hit, it turns out the group is also one of the most durable. The 32 songs on this two-disc compilation range from the fist-pumping debut single “Feels Like the First Time” to a brand-new song, “Too Late.” “Waiting for a Girl Like You” and “I Want to Know What Love Is” are the ones everybody knows; “Urgent” is the one that rocks the hardest.
VIDEO GAME NASCAR 09 (EA) After a few false starts, this popular racing series (for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3) finally takes off with some winning new features, including an in-depth career mode. By the time you get around to actually putting pedal to metal — first you need to sign contracts, angle for prime positioning and build a rep — you and your ride are more than ready for some action. And unlike some other racing games, you don’t need to know the difference between a crankshaft and an exhaust valve to enjoy it.
DVD Spaced: The Complete Series (BBC) Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz’s Simon Pegg co-created and stars in this British cult comedy about two strangers who pretend to be a couple so they can share an apartment. Neighbors include a boozing landlady and an artist who’s thisclose to going over the edge. This three-disc set includes all 14 episodes of the surreal series, plus outtakes, commentary (by fans like Quentin Tarantino and Diablo Cody) and an onscreen Homage-O-Meter, which pinpoints the show’s many pop-culture references.
VIDEO GAME Top Spin 3 (2K Sports) More real doesn’t always equal more fun. But this tennis sim (for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii and Nintendo DS) manages to look and play like the real thing, without laboring over the sport’s more tedious elements. Learning the controls can be kind of a pain, but once you customize a player — or choose from a number of tennis pros, like Andy Roddick and Maria Sharapova — to suit your style, you’ll be racking up aces in no time.
