Dexter Romweber

With Ghost Writer. Friday, April 9, at the Beachland Ballroom.

Former Flat Duo Jets frontman Dexter Romweber is the Godfather of this generation's guitar/drum renaissance. And Jack White, for one, is more than willing to pay tribute.

"It's nice of him to do so," Romweber says. "I mean, we played a gig with the White Stripes about nine months ago, and he was telling me that he had basically slept with Go Go Harlem Baby."

Like Superman and his telephone booth, Romweber's mild-mannered, nearly naive reserve metamorphoses into celebrated fury once he takes the stage. So why is this Silvertone-slinging wildman still confined to relative anonymity? Well, when Dexter stole the proverbial show in the '80s documentary Athens Inside/Out, the Duo Jets had yet to release their first record. When the major labels finally teased a smile (in the form of 1998's Scott Litt-produced Lucky Eye), Romweber and longtime drummer Crow enacted a less than amicable split, and Romweber's first post-Jets solo offering was released on September 11, 2001, when America had other matters on its collective mind.

But a new disc, Blues That Defy My Soul, will come out in June, and a Dexter documentary, tentatively titled Rocker, will travel the film festival circuit this fall -- another chance for Romweber to escape the tight-lid box of influence and reap what he has sown.
