Dieselboy

"Jungle Lounge," featuring Dieselboy, Tik-Tak, Still Life, Ian Mariano, and Pureplex. Wednesday, January 31, at Spy.

Dieselboy (Pittsburgh native Damian Higgins) has spent almost 10 years perfecting the art of melting wax, and along the way he has earned a reputation for throwing down relentless drum 'n' bass sets. It all started in '91, when T99's Belgian hardcore techno anthem "Anasthasia" inspired Higgins to get into the rave scene and the world of breakbeat hardcore. As the genre has evolved into drum 'n' bass over the years, Higgins's DJ career has evolved too, starting with bookings at raves and clubs around the U.S. and eventually leading to international engagements. Now that Dieselboy has the spotlight, he has all of the benefits that come with it, including access to the most up-to-date dubplates (extremely limited pressings of records that won't be released commercially for months). Higgins has also laid claim recently to a multirecord contract with Palm Pictures -- something he'll need, as he has just started producing his own drum 'n' bass tracks with the help of veteran British producer Mark "Technical Itch" Caro. In fact, two of Higgins's own tracks, "The Descent" and "Invid," lay at the heart of his first mix CD release for Palm, The Sixth Session, which provides a fair gauge for what to expect when he performs at Spy. Though he routinely speeds up the records he plays to about 180 bpm, his mixing is clean, providing seamless transitions from one track to the next. And with the fresh dubplates constantly rolling in, you're guaranteed to get an earful of the future of drum 'n' bass when he steps up to the turntables.
