Based on a comic book character, this dystopic sci-fi superhero flick might have come too late in the year to capitalize on the summer movie madness, but don’t hold that against it. The film centers on Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) a no-nonsense police sergeant who does everything by the book. He’s such a pro, he doubts that rookie Judge Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), who has just been assigned to him, has what it takes to deal with the criminal elements who rule the city’s underground. When they end up trapped in a particularly rough and tough housing project, they must use all their resources to try to counteract an evil prostitute-turned-gang leader (Lena Headey). Director Pete Travis gets a bit carried away with the 3-D effects, but the film has an undeniable intensity to it, and the theme of gang warfare strikes a real chord.
