Dub Narcotic Sound System

Thursday, April 24, at the Grog Shop.

Just as King Tubby was neither royalty nor fat, Calvin Johnson's post-Beat Happening project is neither dub nor narcotic, and it's a paltry excuse for a sound system. Regardless, the Olympia, Washington trio wants you to party hard, and it'll come off the stage and shake your hips for you if necessary.

It's been five years since DNSS released an album (in '99 they issued Sideways Soul with Jon Spencer Blues Explosion), though they're set to return with the "Hand Clappin'" EP (on Cal's K Records). The disc's four tracks of tepid frat-boy funk and Johnson's lame braggadocio-filled rapping/toasting (sure, he's just jivin', but somehow that makes the crime worse) makes us want to ingest narcotics to escape Dub's inane, unsystematic sound. Johnson recently mangled his middle finger in a printing-press accident. We urge you to give him yours.
