Enter the Dragon

These Chinese acrobats were pros when Cirque du Soleil was still in its infancy.

Long before Cirque du Soleil made its mark around the world, the Chinese Golden Dragon Acrobats were climbing poles, juggling ladders, and creating human pyramids onstage in their homeland. Nearly three decades later, the 21-member troupe is booked through the middle of next year, with a stop in Canton tonight. "It's incredible what they do," says Kristine Furlan, the Palace's director. "They balance on bicycles — on one another. They use chairs and all sorts of rolling balls. Their body contortions are unbelievable. Their strength is unbelievable."

Since 1978, the acrobats have performed in 65 countries and throughout the U.S. Furlan says she was fortunate to book them last year, before they killed during a six-week run at New York's New Victory Theater. "They went to Broadway, and they were a smash," she says. "Their reviews were so fantastic. Lucky me."
