Eyes Adrift

With Sounder. Thursday, April 25, at the Grog Shop.

Krist Novoselic is about to revisit the kind of media scrutiny reserved for the nosebleed echelon of rock celebrity, when he returns to the spotlight with his latest band, the quasi-supergroup Eyes Adrift. The trio, consisting of former Nirvana bassist Novoselic, Meat Puppets guitarist/vocalist Curt Kirkwood, and ex-Sublime/Long Beach Dub Allstars drummer Bud Gaugh, is working an alt-country/rock vein -- a variation, perhaps, of Kirkwood's Southwest-tinged Meat Puppets output. The group is Novoselic's first real band since he assembled Sweet 75 for a lone album in 1997, while Kirkwood was last seen in the Royal Neanderthal Orchestra in 1998, which morphed into a repopulated Meat Puppets in 2000 (featuring former Bob Mould bassist Andrew Duplantis and Doug Sahm's son Shandon on drums; visibly absent was Kirkwood's drug-troubled brother Cris).

This isn't the first time that Novoselic and Kirkwood have worked together. Kirkwood, long a favorite of Kurt Cobain's, sat in with Nirvana on its MTV Unplugged appearance in 1994, the year after the Meat Puppets opened Nirvana's In Utero tour. Eyes Adrift has reportedly been at work on material for its debut album, although the band remains unsigned, and its current tour is a brief jaunt designed to road-test the songs it has come up with since forming late last year, including a 15-minute workout called "Pasted" and an indictment of the media over the JonBenet Ramsey case dubbed "Inquiring Minds."

At this point, Eyes Adrift seems more a project than a band. Novoselic disbanded Sweet 75, and Gaugh has officially left the Long Beach Dub Allstars, but Kirkwood is still ostensibly a member of the Meat Puppets and continues to work a solo angle as well (his acoustic tour last summer and fall was where he connected with Novoselic and Gaugh, and where the seeds of Eyes Adrift were planted). Whatever the band's status, Eyes Adrift is the hot name on everyone's lips.
