Fireside Concerts

When: Thu., Jan. 23 2014
When trapped in cold, arctic conditions, one of the best ways to stay warm is by sharing body heat with another person. During the times before central heating became commonplace, people came together in parlors to listen to music and sing songs. Drive the Cold Winter Away, a concert series by Cleveland's baroque orchestra Apollo’s Fire, offers the chance not only to listen to classic English ballads but also to mix and mingle with others over a cup of hot cider. As part of the unique concert experience, audience members can chat with the performers after the show. Tonight’s concert highlights the lute, an instrument you’ve probably seen in any period-piece with a minstrel but maybe didn’t get the opportunity to thoroughly enjoy. Grammy-nominated lutenist Ronn McFarlane may give you a new perspective on this instrument. The concert takes place tonight and tomorrow night at 7:30 at Rockefeller's in Cleveland Heights. The program repeats at 8 p.m. on Saturday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Cleveland Heights and at 4 p.m. on Sunday at Rocky River Presbyterian Church. Tickets start at $21. (Stoops) 3099 Mayfield Rd., Cleveland Heights, 216-320-0012, apollosfire.org.
