Run celebrates diversity with ethnic music groups on the sidelines.

At today’s Walk & Rock, which kicks off at the Rock Hall, participants break a sweat for just about everybody under the sun. That’s the point of the Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio’s popular event, now in its fifth year. “Diversity means everything -- gender, economic, physical,” says Peggy Zone Fisher, the center’s president. “It’s every ism you can imagine.”

This year’s run includes a 5K for the first time. The Health & Wellness Pavilion also makes its debut, providing blood pressure and cholesterol screenings. Proceeds benefit diversity education in more than 150 local schools. Participants vie for commemorative T-shirts and sweatshirts, but everyone’s a winner, since contestants get to check out the Rock Hall and the neighboring Great Lakes Science Center for free all day. Traditional music and dance groups will also perform along the three-mile downtown route. “It keeps the walkers pumped,” says Fisher.
