At the weekly Middle Eastern Dance Sessions With Nailah, Nancy Schuemann teaches ladies how to shake their hips, move their rib cages, and seductively work veils into the mix. “Originally, it was a dance by women for women,” says Schuemann (aka Nailah), who dismisses a prevailing myth about the traditional dance. “Belly dancers are not strippers. I don’t believe in performing in seedy bars. We’re more covered up than people on the street.”
