New to DVD this week

Hereafter (Warner) Clint Eastwood gets metaphysically messy in his latest movie, a slow-moving rumination on the afterlife that juggles three separate stories in three separate countries, before everything comes together in the end. There's one knockout scene — the first one, in which a tsunami rips through Indonesia. And one interesting story — reluctant psychic Matt Damon's relationship with Bryce Dallas Howard, which has little to do with Hereafter's big picture. Credit director Eastwood — on a roll with Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby, and Gran Turismo before this — for undertaking such an ambitious project. Too bad it ends up so muddled and spiritually soggy.

Au Revoir les Enfants (Criterion) — Louis Malle's autobiographical 1987 movie set in Nazi-occupied France finally comes to Blu-ray. It tells the story of two boys at a boarding school. One is Jewish and in hiding. Don't expect a happy ending. Great extras include interviews and a Charlie Chaplin short.

Sharktopus (Anchor Bay) — Syfy has been churning out new craptastic Roger Corman movies over the past couple of years. This one is the most fun. As you can probably guess by the title, the star is a giant shark-octopus hybrid that terrorizes Mexico. Eric Roberts stars. What are you waiting for?

The Switch (Lionsgate) — Dreadful artificial-insemination comedy starring Jason Bateman and Jennifer Aniston. He gets drunk at her party and swaps the donor sample in the bathroom. Seven years later, Aniston's son looks a lot like Bateman. Deleted scenes and an alternate ending spread the pain.
