Given the fact that the last couple of Adam Sandler live-action comedies have tanked, it’s understandable that the comedic actor would give animation a try. And it turns out his obnoxiousness is well suited to the genre. In Hotel Transylvania, he voices Dracula, an overprotective father who has forbidden his teenage daughter, Mavis (Selena Gomez), from ever leaving the hotel/castle he’s created as a safe haven for monsters. When hiker Jonathan (Andy Samberg) stumbles across the mansion and falls for Mavis, Dracula must rethink his no-human policy and be careful not to offend his monster friends (voiced by the likes of Kevin James, Fran Drescher, Jon Lovitz, Cee Lo Green, Steve Buscemi, and David Spade). The plot offers no real surprises, and the family-friendly approach is bound to please parents and piss off discriminating critics who’ve seen this type of storyline too many times.
