Budding Buddhists get a spiritual primer.

At tonight’s Introduction to Tibetan Buddhism, Anne Warren fills folks in on why yoga, karma, and the Dalai Lama are so cool. The Tremont-based Jewel Heart has been a haven for local Buddhists for years. For the next two Wednesdays, it’s holding free orientation classes for the curious. The focus is on Vajrayana Buddhism, which originated in Tibet. “It’s like the difference between Quakers and Greek Orthodox,” says Warren of the various forms of the religion. “Buddhist traditions are as far apart as Christian traditions. They have a common origin, but there are different flavors.”

At today’s 90-minute workshop, students will also learn about Jewel Heart’s ongoing programs -- like Guru Yoga sessions, Vajrayogini meditation groups, and the Lam Rim series that runs down the universal laws of karma. They’ll also hear about monthly Dharma Talks lectures, weekly Odyssey to Freedom workshops for beginners, and periodic Tsoh prayer meetings for veterans. “You can be of any faith or no faith to study Buddhism,” says Warren. “We should really have called the class ‘Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Buddhism but Were Afraid to Ask’.”
Wednesdays, 7 p.m. Starts: March 21. Continues through March 28
