Just A Poor Boy, His Story Seldom Told

Letters 10/25/08

I just wanted to thank you for your wonderful article about Kelly Pavlik in Scene ("The Hero," October 1). Though I'm now at school at Kent State, I was born and raised in Youngstown and still have tremendous pride for my little city. It was so refreshing to see Youngstown painted in a hopeful light for a change, instead of focusing on how our city is "dying." When I came in to work and saw Kelly on the cover, I nearly shed a tear of joy. He has been a godsend for Youngstown, and I know he'll help put Youngstown back on the map. Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing his story with Northeast Ohio!

MISTAKEPROOF?

In the review of the movie Fireproof (October 15), Charles Cassady states that Fireproof is the second movie from the Kendricks "after Facing the Giants." That is incorrect. The Kendricks also produced, starred in and directed the movie Flywheel from 2003.

PLACE YOUR BESTS

Thank you so much for recognizing the Porter Public Library in the recent issue of Scene (Best of Cleveland, October 8). When the paper was delivered yesterday, it created quite a bit of excitement around here. Because there are so many fabulous libraries in the Cleveland area, it is truly an honor to be the one selected as "The Best."

Andrew Mangels

Director, Westlake Porter Public Library In response to Craig Callander being chosen as the Best of 2008 for Cleveland's Local Radio Personality, I find his show to be greatly entertaining. In this radio market with Rover, Maxwell and O&A, we are filled with the ins and outs of shock-jockery, but with the 669 show we can get a taste of something different and new every time we listen. Obviously the local listeners are fans of the show for Callander to be chosen, and I think Scene made a good choice picking him. He also lists previous Best Ofs on his web site at 669radio.com - it amazes me how many times he has won. You are doing local talk radio a great favor by allowing those who are unaware of the 669 Shangri-la to sit up and take notice!

REPUBLICAN ROBO-LETTER OF THE WEEK

We grew up in the Appalachian region. Our roots were in farming and coal mining. It was this environment of a strong work ethic and love/caring friends that has molded our lives. We did move away but have never forgotten our roots.

Sen. Obama has campaigned for your vote. Do not be fooled by his promises. His polices are the most socialist of any candidate in my lifetime. I remember vividly the book Masters of Deceit by J. Edgar Hoover from my high-school government class. Although this book was about communism, one can relate it to socialism.

Recall from history how Hitler promised the German people many, many things to get their vote. When Hitler gained power, he indoctrinated the youth. The youth turned against their parents when they spoke against Hitler and turned them into the SS. William Ayers held these same beliefs. He went against our government and told youth to kill the rich, and to go home and kill their parents. This is disturbing.

Obama's campaign made a musical skit with third-graders in California. In this skit they referred to him as "Alpha-Omega." This is another word for God in the Book of Revelations. When Louis Farrakhan endorsed Obama, he referred to him as the Messiah. Obama has not denounced either of these. This is disturbing.

We love our country and want what is best for this great land. We will cast our vote for a great American who has always served his country with dignity. This man is Sen. John McCain.

CORRECTION

In last week's news story on Jigsaw Entertainment Group and the Agora ("Safety in Numbers," October 15), we incorrectly reported that another deal, involving Jigsaw, MetroSync and Lava Room Recording, was imminent. In fact, Lara had said that nothing was finalized. Scene regrets the error.
