It's not easy being a Go-Go -- bassist Kathy Valentine can attest to this -- what with the touring, the fans, the money. Okay, so maybe it's nice to be a pop star, but success isn't everything. "It's a part of my life, but not the main part," Valentine says. "I have plenty of time to develop other ideas." Many are found on her solo debut, Light Years, which she released on her own label, All for One.
Light Years contains enough cathartic middle-aged housewife anthems to have soccer moms smiling the entire drive to school. Valentine proves a capable songwriter, and there are few glimpses of her past on the album, proving that even pop icons have to grow up sometime. "[My songs] tend to be philosophical and expressive of my views on life and the human condition," she says. "I don't write too many lovesick tunes anymore!"
Thanks to the Go-Go's relatively light touring schedule, Valentine has been able to experiment with other media; she has a reality show in production with co-Go-Go Charlotte Caffey and sister '80s trivia answer, Vicki Peterson of the Bangles. Factor in the pressure of being a wife and mother, and one marvels that Valentine isn't reaching for the Xanax. "I make it all work," she says, "and love being busy, creative, and productive."
