When: Fri., Aug. 9, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $13 ADV, $15 DOS
There was a moment in the ’90s when rapper Kool Keith was the shit. A founding member of the groundbreaking crew the Ultramagnetic MCs, he adopted a number of different monikers and hooked up with talented Bay Area producer Dan the Automator for 1997’s wacky Dr. Octagonecologyst, which he released under the name Dr. Octagon. On the album’s jazzy intro, a woman whispers “fuck my pussy, doctor” before Keith comes in, delivering tongue-twisting raps about hip-hop moving on to “the year 3000.” On “I Got To Tell You,” he raps over a bit of classical music and in the scratch-heavy single “Earth People,” he claims to have been born on Jupiter. And he raps nonchalantly over a distorted string arrangement in “Blue Flowers.” Wild stuff. Keith has tried to recapture the magic with sequels but they’ve paled by comparison. Still, Keith rarely appears in Cleveland so this show is highly anticipated. (Jeff Niesel)
