With a sultry low and energetic voice, Aly Spaltro, the main creative force behind Lady Lamb the Beekeeper, continues her extensive east coast tour with a stop in Ohio to promote her debut album Ripely Pine. The album is invigoratingly creative and the vocals as well as the high energy instrumentals instantly suck you into Spaltro’s dark world. “Bird Balloons” is the standout track off the album because at six minutes long it’s able to keep the listener's attention throughout the piece using a catchy guitar riff reminiscent of an old Black Keys blues sound. Effective soft parts draw you in closer as the song mellows out only to blast you away finishing out with the head banging anger of a lost love. Spaltro has experience from her days of making experimental recordings when she worked at Bart’s & Greg’s DVD Explosion in Brunswick, Maine where she manned the cash register by day and recorded music by night. That experience likely influenced her newest music video for “The Nothing Part Two,” which begins with a masked villain, Spaltro, kidnapping several people, tying them to chairs and forcing them to eat pie via an elaborate rope system that’s attached to her guitar. The video ends with the hostages escaping and throwing pie at Spaltro while restrained to a table. Aside from the wacky video, the music is eerie and really draws you into a dark world while somehow simultaneously being upbeat. Ripely Pine is energetic, engaging and innovative in ways that make it hard to compare to other artists. (William Hoffman)
