Lightning Bolt has captured the hearts of indie-rock feebs by being hard 'n' heavy, but free of the lower-class indentifiers (and consequent social stigma) of being, y'know, metal. It's a bass-drums duo, and it sounds sort of like the melee that would ensue had Cliff Burton joined Japanese prog-thrashers Ruins -- less Mahavishnu medleys, more wailing noise. Bonus: The drummer wears a ski mask with a mic duct-taped in place over his mouth. Bonus bonus: they prefer to play in the middle of the floor instead of on the stage. So, they've got the spazzy noisecore/art-terrorism thing going, plus the singing-drummer thing! How can you go wrong with a combo like that?
Evil Beaver is another bass-drums duo, but much of its volatility seems to be offstage right now. Its players existed as Evie Evil (bass) and Laura Ann Beaver (drums) for about five years, but the current incarnation, with one of three pickup drummers, is Evil. Check the website www.evilbeaver.us for Evie's story, and www.ridethebeaver.com for Laura's. There are lawyers involved; it's worth a read, just to see how punk rock can drive some folks plumb crazy.
