Local Band in Focus

Alexis Antes

Meet the Artist: The singer-songwriter often plays solo, but when she does full gigs, she calls on former Odd Girl Out bandmates Victoria Fliegel (guitar), Brian Bretton (drums), and Chris deHaas or Derek Poindexter (bass).

Something to Talk About: Antes' first performance was when she was five or six years old at Red Horse Hollow, a 1970s Lakewood coffeehouse and folk venue owned by her parents. "I remember sitting on a stool with my head down, singing an Anne Murray tune," she says. She co-founded Odd Girl Out right after high school and launched her solo career in 1996.

Coming Soon: Antes is long overdue for a new album. Her last full-length, All Come Down, came out in 2003. "I plan to start recording in early 2012 and have something out by spring," she says.

Worth the Price of Admission: "If you come to a live show and don't like what you get, I'll give you a free autographed CD to take home with you to use as a doorstop, coaster, Frisbee, whatever," promises Antes.

Chew on This: Antes' brother Chris is the Gum Man, an artist who sculpts objects using only the gum in his mouth. "I have been asked if this talent runs in the family," says Antes. "All I can say is that I can make something that looks like a simple gingerbread man cutout."

Why You Should Hear Her: Antes writes and plays girl-centric adult pop splashed with words of love, loss, and wisdom. Her first professional solo gig was opening for Dan Fogelberg at Nautica Pavilion. In 1998, she opened Lilith Fair at Blossom. "That was the thrill of a lifetime," she says.
