Los Straitjackets

With Big Sandy and Purple K'nif. Saturday, April 28, at the Beachland.

Los Straitjackets
Dressed as masked Mexican wrestlers, los Straitjackets are best known for applying their surf-guitars to collections of holiday classics, including 'Tis the Season for los Straitjackets! and Halloween Hootenanny. Through the sunny months, however, the group plays instrumental versions of pop-rock hits; check out its Wurlitzerized take on the Titanic theme, Celine's "My Heart Will Go On"; it's pure cheezy bliss.

For the group's latest, Rock en Español Vol. 1, los Lobos' Cesar Rosas and Thee Midniters' Little Willie G join los Straitjackets for a hopping Saturday-night twist party. Between ballads like los Freddy's "Dejenme Llorar," the band nails the Kinks' gritty riffs on "All Day and All of the Night" and translates the Troggs' "Wild Thing" into Esperanto.

Touring with rockabilly revivalist Big Sandy, the band is performing two shows. The first is a short afternoon set for children -- with lower volume, cluck-along favorites like "Itchy Chicken," and no tequila jokes. (If you're dreading the upcoming live production of Go Diego Go, try steering the little ones this way.) And when the sun goes down, the group returns for a rowdy, racier set. Muy caliente!
