Jakob Ward is a jack-of-all-trades in Akron music circles. In addition to fronting modern rockers Community 5 (pictured) and running a recording studio behind the vintage-clothing store Funky Hippie, Ward is hosting the DiverseCity CD Release Party at the Lime Spider on Friday. The 18-track compilation (the second in a series; the first was released last year) features 14 Ohio bands, including 20 Goto 10, the Speed Bumps, the Brian Lisik Band, and Time No Reason. Eight of the bands -- Echoes of Moira and Alexander the Ghost, among them -- will play 40-minute sets each at Friday's fete. "The purpose is to help promote artists from Ohio that are on the scene and to introduce other artists who are trying to emerge," Ward explains. "Definitely, we have a lot of enthusiasm." The music starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Lime Spider, 207 South Main Street in Akron. Tickets are $3 to $5. Call 330-762-2350 for more information. -- Cris Glaser
Rock 'n' Roll High School Teachers
"This week, we're a quirky garage band," says John Jakes Mose guitarist and songwriter Ron Ciarnello. The local quartet (led by a pair of high school teachers) unveils its new CD, Out of Sorts, at 9 p.m. Saturday at DePompei's Broadway Garden, 811 Broadway Avenue in Bedford. Admission is free; call 440-232-9872. -- Michael Gallucci
Sensitive Young Man Alert
Twenty-four-year-old singer-songwriter Ben Jelen's lush piano arrangements are prompting comparisons to Vanessa Carlton. It's appropriate: His debut CD, Give It All Away, is filled with delicate words and hooks. He's at Peabody's (2083 East 21st Street) at 7 p.m. Thursday. Tickets are $20 (which includes a pass for the four-day Cleveland Music Festival); call 216-241-5555. -- Michael Gallucci
