Illusionist David Copperfield is known for making things vanish: people, train cars, airplanes -- even the Statue of Liberty. But somebody else, it seems, has made Dave's sense of humor disappear. As he prepares to bring David Copperfield: An Intimate Evening of Grand Illusion to town this weekend after a successful Las Vegas stand, the 46-year-old trickster is all serious about his craft. ("All of the illusions in the show are based on dreams," he says. "I take people to that perfect place.")
We figured we'd lighten the mood by avoiding the same questions he's heard millions of times (What happened with him and supermodel ex-girlfriend Claudia Schiffer? Is he really gay?). We probably won't do that again . . .
I'm thinking of a number. What is it?
"Come to the show. There's a whole system where you can actually see something that might take place and know what happens before it does."
Who do you want to disappear?
"You know the list."
Have you ever had the urge to saw your girlfriend in half?
"Sometimes. But with my luck, I usually get the half that eats."
"Magic Man" is my favorite Heart song. What's yours?
"What are the other choices?"
"Crazy on You."
(Sings part of the song's chorus.) "Hmmm . . . what else?"
"What About Love?"
"I'm into Alicia Keys now."
Did you ever want to round up a posse of other magicians to kick the ass of that masked dude who was giving out your secrets on TV a few years ago?
"No. He's no big deal. He's no threat. He was just guessing."
Why are all you guys such fine dressers?
(Pause.) "There have been no sequins or spangles in my show for the past 10 years. I dress cool. I'm like a Gap ad."
But you still have the lovely assistants?
"Of course. The girls look good. I'm attracted to beauty like everyone else."
What is your one elusive illusion? Houdini had that underwater thing that didn't go so well.
"He did that for years in his show. You're thinking of Tony Curtis in the movie."
I guess I am.
So, what's the one illusion?
"To do this same interview a hundred years from now."
Think you will?
"If you're around."
