Portland, Oregon-based Menomena takes do-it-yourself to another level. They packaged their 2003 debut, I Am the Fun Blame Monster!, in an 80-page flipbook that they assembled by hand, and they created similarly intricate packaging for 2007’s Friend and Foe. Though they’ve pared down to a duo for their new album, Moms, you wouldn’t know it from the way the record sounds. Songs such as the percussion-driven “Pique” and the woozy, psychedelic “Baton” are as dense as anything they’ve recorded in the past. It’s a highly personal recording as multi-instrumentalist Danny Seim writes about experiencing the death of his mother while he was a teenager and his multi-instrumentalist musical partner Justin Harris explores his own deep-seated resentments toward a deadbeat dad. Be sure to arrive early to check out Australia’s PVT, an electronica indie-rock act that just issued the twitchy single “Shiver” to rave reviews. (Jeff Niesel)
