Michelle Shocked always sang with soul, and it runs deeper than ever on her album, ToHeavenURide. When she's not belting out deep, rootsy blues, she stretches her pipes in a gospel choir. That side of her is front-and-center for the collection of traditional spirituals and original songs, which pays tribute to greats like Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Billie Holiday. We'd call it "heavenly" if the drums or vocals showed any kind of restraint; it's informed by her Sunday-morning singing, but it sounds like a Saturday-night party to us.
