Mindless Self Indulgence/The Red Paintings

Price: $23 ADV, $25 DOS
Take four friends influenced by a wide array of weird stuff and put instruments in front of them and you have the recipe of Mindless Self Indulgence. Mashing into a hodgepodge of strange, their other biggest influence/characteristic is their vehement opposition towards the rest of the music world - in simpler terms, “whatever you do, we’ll do the opposite.” And while this makes them nearly impossible to stick labels to, they built their foundation upon the “no-man’s land” outside of typical music genres and called it home. Their first couple albums established their cult-style appeal and their master level of profanity, while their later two albums teased the idea of them breaking out into a bigger scene. But after taking an extended hiatus after their 2008 record If, they resurfaced and released their latest album How I Learned to Stop Giving a Shit and Love Mindless Self Indulgence through Kickstarter. According to frontman Jimmy Urine, the ridiculously long album title is not only a message for the people who are all uptight about them, it also represents the epiphany they had when they returned from their hiatus. “We realized that we were in a good fucking situation. We have a great band, great fans, and we have control over everything we do. So it made perfect sense,” he says. And the album itself is exactly what you’d expect from MSI: abrasive and simple guitar chords paired with synth beats and industrial-sounding drum machines, and brazen songs with choruses that are equally as catchy as they are vulgar.
