Money Where Your Mouth Is

THIS WEEK: 12.08-12.14

Band: The Slack-Jawed Yokels
(theslackjawedyokels.com)
Hometown: Granger
Sounds like: "Put us in a centrifuge and out will spin particles of Nashville Pussy, a strange compound with two molecules of Reverend Horton Heat and one of Hank III, and some of our own mystery residue that gunks it all together nicely."
Fun fact: "Jimbo [Hissem, bass and vocals] was Liza Minelli's understudy for the off-Broadway musical The Fantasticks. Philly [Nelson, guitar] sneaks jars of pickled pig's feet into the movies, and Joey [Hissem, drums] gets more tail than a hunter on the first day of duck season."
Playing: Saturday, December 10, at the Lime Spider, Akron
Why you should see them: "We'll rock your face off and make your pants itch."
-- Jimbo Hissem

Band: ToRne
(http://www.myspace.com/torne)
Hometown: Cleveland
Sounds like: "If you mix the grunge of Seattle with two cups of southern metal, then add a cup of Black Sabbath and a pinch of G N' R, you have ToRne."
Fun fact: "We give homeless people tickets to sell. Hey, sometimes it works! It's good for them -- they can sell the ticket and buy a 40-oz., and we get people to the show while helping homeless alcoholics."
Playing: Monday, December 12, at Peabody's
Why you should see them: "There isn't anything better to do on a Monday night, Peabody's rocks, Dope always brings a lot of chicks, and everyone will get a chance to check out ToRne. In case you didn't know, ToRne has a lot of Cleveland pride. We have the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and we want to prove Cleveland isn't a joke. Go Browns!"
-- Matt Demko, vocals

Band: David Mayfield Band
(www.davidmayfield.net)
Hometown: Kent
Sounds Like: "Hardcore traditional kick-yer-ass grass."
Fun fact: "In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts. So in old England, when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them to mind their pints and quarts, and settle down. It's where we get the phrase 'mind your P's and Q's.'"
Playing: Saturday, December 10, at the Happy Dog
Why you should see them: "This four-piece powerhouse is bigger than your musical pigeonholes, stronger than your prejudices, and louder than the conventional wisdom that says bluegrass is a mere splinter of country music or a 'noncommercial' folk genre."
-- David Mayfield, guitar, mandolin, and vocals

Band: Oval Opus
(http://www.ovalopus.com)
Hometown: Cincinnati
Sounds like: "Soulful modern rock with a groove."
Fun fact: "One time, we got into a private VIP party for Maxim by convincing the door guy we were writers for the TV show Family Guy."
Playing: Friday, December 9, at the Hi-Fi Club
Why you should see them: "We make pandas want to mate."
-- Aaron Patrick, vocals
