My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult

Monday, October 29, at the Odeon.

Thirteen years after unleashing its razor-sharp, eardrum-blasting electronic dance music upon an unsuspecting populace, the uncomfortably titled My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult is still dry-humping the leg of a mostly uninterested public. Initially formed as an experimental film project, the Kult has never made much headway into the mainstream -- although it did manage some modern-rock airplay with "Sex on Wheelz" at the start of alt-rock's celebrated heyday 10 years ago. The underground, however, has continually embraced this trio, now led by Groovie Mann and Buzz McCoy. Their just-released seventh album, The Reincarnation of Luna, is the ensemble's first in four years, and -- surprise, surprise -- it's another heavy-breathing helping of dance music for post-apocalyptic club kids. Which means, if you weren't a fan of the Kult before, Luna sure isn't gonna win you over. Groovie and Buzz lay down all the usual electropunk, and new singer Miss Lady Cherrie Blue, who used to answer to Lady Galore when she was a part of Lords of Acid, complements the trash heap perfectly with her own oversexed style. The Thrill Kill Kult expands to a six-piece machine for its "Burning Dirt Tour 2001," which makes its way to our city Monday. If past tours are any indication, expect plenty of faux-sleaze theatrics -- as well as an overriding sense of vertigo, as the group pounds its quasi-techno grooves into your skull with relentless precision. We hear it's supposed to get us all hot and bothered, but frankly, we can only vouch for the latter.
