Derek Poindexter claims that Plasma's fondness for wearing surgical gowns onstage has nothing to do with new-wave oddballs Devo, who were also known for wacky wardrobes. "The outfits were not so much inspired by the Brothers Casale or Mothersbaugh as they were by the scientific reference to plasma," says Poindexter, the band's bassist. "The obvious connotation needed lab coats." While it's scheduled to play Saturday's Sound Benefit Music festival at Tri-C's Eastern Campus, the alt-rock quartet is scaling back its calendar of club dates to make it "more of a hobby than a full-time job." "One can go out to bars only so long," says Poindexter, who also teaches music-business classes at the college. "It gets loud and old. And my liver needs a break." Or perhaps a transplant? It's been a quarter-century since Jake and Elwood Blues (John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd) put on their shades and suits, embarked on a mission from God, and tore up Chicago, with a little help from Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, and John Lee Hooker. In The Blues Brothers 25th Anniversary Edition DVD (which comes out Tuesday), director John Landis offers both the original 1980 theatrical movie and an extended director's cut. Thankfully, Landis' dubious tweaking doesn't get in the way of the massive car crashes and R&B-soaked musical performances that drive the comedy. In addition to presenting a pretty decent game of spot-the-cameo -- John Candy, Paul "Pee-wee Herman" Reubens, and Frank Oz, the voice of Yoda, all make appearances -- the two-disc set features a making-of documentary (including a look at the original Saturday Night Live skit that started it all) and a new Aykroyd intro. -- Michael Gallucci

The Western Reserve Historical Society will unveil the Fred Glover Collection at Saturday's Cleveland Barons Hockey Day, a tribute to the late, great forward, who racked up 17 seasons (six as head coach) with the team. Glover's brother Howie and Wayne Muloin (both former Barons) will share memories and sign autographs. "The AHL was as good as the NHL at that time," says Muloin.
