Party People in the Streets

Locals celebrate the end of summer with a block-wide fest.

DJ Bob Ganem provides the soundtrack to today’s Dancin’ in the Streets block party. Enjoy the tunes -- Ganem says this is his “last hurrah” before he retires his CD collection and begins taking business classes at Cleveland State University. He plans to mix things up today with a combo of tribal-house and hi-NRG tracks at the 23rd-annual bash, which benefits the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland. “School is something I need to do right now,” he says. “But it’s really killing me.”

The fest typically draws more than 2,000 revelers to Clifton Boulevard, between West 116th and 117th streets. This year’s bash features four DJs, a mini carnival, and lots of booze. “An entire generation has grown up with this event -- me included,” says organizer and Twist nightclub owner John Katsaros. “Whoever came up with everybody dancing in the street while they catch a buzz had a great idea.” For the third straight year, Ganem will spin in a towering DJ booth right in the middle of the action. An adjacent parking lot features a medieval jousting ring, an obstacle course, and a rock-climbing wall. And area shops like Kitsch City and Pet-Tique will line the sidewalk with their goods. “Sometimes these events go overboard,” says Katsaros. “They bring all these DJs and vendors from out of state, and the locals wonder why. We have all this great talent right here. This is for Cleveland from Cleveland in Cleveland.”
