Pela's story is at least as old as the American Dream — maybe older. Slowly but surely, the Brooklyn-based indie-rockers are inching their way toward that dream — each of the 160,000 hits on their MySpace page symbolically marking another notch in listeners' hearts. So it was a real bummer when guitarist Billy McCarthy fell off a Chicago stage in March, landing on broken glass and slicing tendons in his hand, forcing the group to cancel the rest of its tour supporting Liam Finn. But fierce dedication being what it is, Pela quickly returned to the road, ready to storm the country with its no-nonsense rock and roll — whose pedigree can be traced to the Springsteen-inflected jitters of Arcade Fire as well as the dark indie anthems of fellow New Yorkers the National.
