Barking Spider audiences have grown accustomed since 1988 to Dover guitarist Gary Hall's monthly concerts. By the end of the night, the 59-year-old Vietnam vet has treated them to little-known ditties by Bob Franke, Kristina Olsen, and Don Schlitz. But don't get him started on the reasons why he hasn't recorded a CD of originals since the 20 tunes he put on disc for Well-Used in 1995. "I'm not a cover act. But I'm not all original," says Hall. "There's just a point when you're hesitant to reveal any more of yourself." The exception is at the Spider's open-mic nights on the first Tuesday of every month, when Hall passes on his know-how to younger singers and songwriters. "I love mentoring them," he says.
