Port of Shadows

A French film from the 1930s, Port of Shadows is a collaboration between director Marcel Carne and screenwriter Jacques Prevert, two guys who would go on to achieve great acclaim with their 1945 film Children of Paradise, which regularly makes critics’ lists as one of the best films of all time. The storyline in Port involves an army deserter trying to find a way out of France. He befriends — and falls in love with — a teenager also attempting to flee the country. But she has a few troubles of her own and he ultimately can’t decide if he should go leave the country with or without her. This restored version of the film features newly translated subtitles.
