Pride and Joy

Rockers hook up at gay fest, cover lesbian artists.

The all-female Early Girl breaks out Ani DiFranco, Commonbond, and Indigo Girls covers at its show at the Nickel tonight. Yep, they’re gay. “But you’d be amazed at how many male fans we have,” says drummer Becky McMahon. Still, she hopes audiences pay attention to the music, rather than waste time “figuring out our sexual orientation.”

The local band formed two years ago, after McMahon and guitarist Steph Burke saw lesbian rockers Slackjaw perform at the Cleveland Gay Pride Festival. Soon after, Slackjaw singer Angelisa Crognale and guitarist Laura Ackerman joined. “We clicked right away,” says McMahon. “To make an all-woman band work, patience is the key, because everyone has a say in everything.” The group has been busy ever since, performing regularly at such venues as the Barking Spider and the Winchester. Next month, it has a pair of gigs lined up at this year’s Pride fest -- including a performance at the kickoff party and during the daylong Voinovich Park bash. “We’ve been blessed that these shows come to us with virtually little effort,” says McMahon. “If I could quit my daytime job and play every night, that would do it for me.”
