On his suavely groovy third album, Mishaps Happening (Ubiquity), he transforms eclectic beatmaking into a tropical soundtrack for deep poolside thoughts and lubricious hip-shaking. "En Focus" sets rapper Trinidad over an Afrobeat shimmy of which Fela Kuti would approve. "Trees and Seas" and "Angels and Albatrosses" throb seductively enough to blend into Herbie Hancock's funk classic Head Hunters. "Prelude to a Happening" showcases Quantic's soulful orchestral chops, recalling Rotary Connection's rococo elegance. And the two tracks with soul legend Spanky Wilson whip up a JBs-like sweat storm. These qualities explain why such discerning DJs as Richard Dorfmeister, Mr. Scruff, Gilles Peterson, and LTJ Bukem have given Quantic's tracks serious deck time. While much of this music often blandly fades into the woodwork, Quantic's material is more vibrant than that of most working in this crowded field. His Mishaps trumps most producers' triumphs.
