Radian/Pan American/Signer

Friday, October 23, at the Grog Shop.

Understanding how someone could have already gotten bored with the sound of laptop punks cruising techno clubs for gray-noise kicks is the first step in leading disenchanted listeners out of the darkness. So, then, let this international triple bill be that doorway. It's certainly the softcore counterattack, the flipside of the digital extreme. Got a jones for melodies that emanate from equipment bearing an Apple logo? They're waiting for you here. But perhaps the best thing about this tour is that the music ain't completely digital.

First, there's Kiwi Signer, whose version of Shangri-La is a less complicated take on Boards of Canada's light-drenched IDM pop vision. His Low Light Dreams (on Carpark, a N.Y.C. indie that specializes in morsels of beautiful melancholy futurism) is one of the better 4 a.m. drive albums of the year.

Next, there's Mark Nelson's one-man flight as Pan American, his vacation from Labradford's slow drones, wherein he spearheads a Yankee take on Berlin dub (think Pole, Vladislav Delay, etc.). As such, he's practically the only dweller of this here continent collaging blips and pulses onto oceans of bass and Eno's endless tones.

Headliner Radian is the bill's most interesting and beguiling presence: a Vienna trio whose records twitch like Oval's, but perform those twitches by playing both digital and analog instruments and processors, rather than just pressing buttons. It's not always funky, but it works. As does this lineup.
