Raheem DeVaughn comes from the Marvin Gaye school of soul-singing. Dude's got a big, smooth voice that he wraps around equally big, smooth grooves. If people were still calling old-school R&B neo-soul, DeVaughn would surely be one of its leaders. His latest album, Love Behind the Melody, definitely has its eyes on the bedroom, but there's enough variety to work in other less romantic settings too. Tourmate Chrisette Michele rides a similar vibe on her debut, I Am. The 25-year-old New Yorker broke through with a guest spot in Jay-Z's "Lost Ones," but her jazzy inflections are more Billie than Aretha.
