Rambler 454 is a trio of grease-stained, beer-buzzed pickup truck jockeys who make the cast of The Drew Carey Show look like didactic poets -- and they're obviously proud of it. Tim Brennan, the manager, calls their music "drinking man's rock and roll." Yeah, the references to lager-swilling are everywhere -- like the story about Cooter forgetting to bring his bass to a recording session, but remembering the Pabst. Rambler 454 is a late-night talk-show host's Cleveland joke incarnate.
If you're still reading, Rambler 454's seven-song CD is a barroom masterpiece. This is rock the way it was meant to be: a feel-good, unpretentious romp, just right for loosening up at the corner gin mill. The guitar work by head Rambler Dan McCoy is infectious on both rockers like "Plan B" and solid country gems like "Second-Hand Man." It's blue-collar magnificence, but with none of that in-your-face attitude about it.
