Regional Beat: Dan Bankhurst

At First Sight (self-released)

danbankhurst.com

Right from the start of his debut, local jazz guitarist Dan Bankhurst makes his affinity for the jam band Phish known with "Phishin'," a tribute of sorts to the group. Though inspired by the guitar work of Phish's Trey Anastasio, Bankhurst embraces a wide range of musical styles on this instrumental album. His brisk finger-picking is certainly impressive on the aforementioned "Phishin'" and on the spirited "Dan's Funk." But he successfully slows the tempo for ballads such as the precious "Grand Man" and his exquisite cover of Van Morrison's "Moondance." The album's not all somber either as Bankhurst displays a sense of humor in "Looney Tune," a song that comes off as a whimsical display of his terrific guitar playing skills.

Dan Bankhurst performs at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17, at the Barking Spider. Foundry.

Lorine Chia performs with DJ Fugitive, Atari Jones, Kipp Stone, Creez Mob, R the Czar, Aphiniti, Tae Fresh, Chris Black and Thurm at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25, at the Foundry.
