Melody A.M. (Astralwerks)

If the dance section of your local record store is any indication, clubland has frozen over. That's what all those "chill out" compilations would suggest, anyway. So why not put yourself in the hands of someone who actually knows a thing or two about wintry landscapes?

Norway's Torbjörn Brundtland and Svein Berge started making music together in their teens, releasing some singles under the ho-hum moniker Those Norwegians. But it's only in the past couple of years, when the duo began recording under the name Röyksopp, that they really found their footing.

The oddly majestic sounds of their debut album, Melody A.M., which was first issued in Europe last year by Wall of Sound, suggest a flexible collective imagination, with textures that shift around with an oddly serene restlessness. Tracks like the ping-pong melodic single "Eple" and the swirling, dramatic "Röyksopp's Night Out" evoke the hazy aftermath of a long night of dancing, when your synapses are still firing, but your body is too tired to respond in kind.
