Soilent Green

With Black Dahlia Murder and Lick Golden Sky. Tuesday, August 12, at the Agora Theatre.

Soilent Green is one of the weirdest bands to come out of the murky Southern noise-core scene. They share Eyehategod's affection for feedback and filth, but rather than heading down a blind alley of doom-riffage, Soilent songs continually mutate as they go along, rarely ending on the same riff with which they began. This makes their albums a chaotic listen, but it's bound to add up to a wild live show: the group's reputation in underground metal circles is sterling.

The Black Dahlia Murder is rapidly garnering the same type of praise, though the music's not as initially off-putting as Soilent Green's. TBDM play fairly straight-forward death metal, featuring one of the best vocalists around. Trevor Strnad has two voices: a high-pitched, almost black-metal screech, and a guttural, post-hardcore roar. He switches from one to the other bewilderingly fast, and when he's backed up by the band's powerful riffs and blasting rhythms, it makes their debut CD, Unhallowed, one of the metal highlights of 2003.
