Somewhere in a penthouse overflowing with Tonys, Oscars, Grammys, and a Pulitzer Prize, Broadway’s greatest living composer is looking down on Cleveland and smiling. And what is there about our little town that makes the great Stephen Sondheim (Gypsy, Sweeney Todd, Company, Into the Woods, and plenty more) break out in a grin? Nothing less than the regional premiere of Sondheim on Sondheim, a musical revue that intertwines dozens of live song performances with exclusive interview footage of the famously reclusive man himself — telling the tale of his life, his artistic process, and the stories behind the songs. Directed by Victoria Bussert, the area’s leading Sondheim authority, the show is a collaboration between Great Lakes Theater and Playhouse Square. Sixty-two performances are set for the Hanna Theatre, Tuesdays through Sundays May 16 through July 8.
