Before Nicholas Wright wrote Vincent in Brixton a couple years ago, nobody knew how Vincent van Gogh lost his virginity. The historical play is based on letters written by the Dutch painter when he was 20 years old and boinking a widowed landlady twice his age. "When you have your first sexual experience, you don't write home about it," says Seth Gordon, who's directing the production opening Tuesday at Cleveland Play House. Van Gogh's correspondences teeter between literary genius and mental breakdown -- the very combination that led to his suicide a couple decades later. "Everybody knows [about the] ear," Gordon says. "But how come nobody liked his work before he died? I think that's why he's such a storied character in history." Vincent in Brixton is at Cleveland Play House (8500 Euclid Avenue) Tuesday through March 7. Show times are 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 4 and 8 p.m. Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $12 to $47.50; call 216-795-7000. -- Cris Glaser
