TOP PICK — VIDEO GAME
Donkey Kong Country Returns
It's been a while since one of the most beloved characters in video-game history starred in a game, and this comeback for the Wii is a great vehicle. It plays a lot like Donkey Kong's old-school adventures, but zapped with new-generation spark. Caves, carts, cannons — they're all back in this time-hogger. There's even a co-op mode so a pal can play as Diddy. It's on!
Nels Cline — Dirty Baby
Wilco's guitarist has released more albums in 2010 than Guns N' Roses have in their entire career. This ambitious two-disc set is the best. Tracks are based on Ed Ruscha's paintings. All kinds of sounds — played by Cline and a bunch of likeminded musicians — run through Dirty Baby, conveying images that are almost as striking as those found in the album's three thick booklets.
Doctor Who: The Complete Fifth Series
Sci-fi fans love this British TV show about a time-traveling doc and his hot companion. And it's easy to see why: there are plenty of in-jokes, apocalyptic storylines, and mind-warping theories about busting through the time-space continuum. This six-disc set includes 13 episodes, plus extras (like outtakes) that will have geeks drooling all over their space modulators.
Top 100 Horror Movies
It's hard to argue with the list Gary Gerani put together for this photo-stuffed book. Movies span the past 100 years — from Nosferatu to Let the Right One In. Each entry breaks down significant historical info as well as convincing reasons why the movie made the list. If you're wondering what's at the top, consider Horror of Dracula's snarling antihero on the book's cover a clue.
The Who — Live at Leeds: 40th Anniversary Super-Deluxe Collectors' Edition
One of the best live albums ever made gets super-sized in this four-disc box. The latest reissue of the 1970 classic tacks on the entire concert the band played in Hull the night after the famous Leeds one (also complete here). The sets are the same — including all of Tommy — but the Who actually wanted the Hull show released as their first live record. Meet the new boss.
