TOP PICK – CD
Bob Marley & the Wailers: Live Forever: The Stanley Theatre, Pittsburgh, PA, September 23, 1980
(UMe/Tuff Gong International)
The 20 songs on this two-disc set make up the last concert Marley ever performed. He died eight months later. It plays like a greatest-hits set, with "No Woman, No Cry," "Jamming," "Could You Be Loved," and "Get Up, Stand Up" all showing up. Best of all is a stripped-down "Redemption Song," which sounds like a final, moving testament from the reggae legend.
Johnny Cash: From Memphis to Hollywood: Bootleg Vol. 2
This two-disc set gathers 57 hard-to-find songs from the Man in Black's first 15 years, including outtakes from the Sun era. It starts with an episode of the 1955 Johnny Cash Show radio program and works its way through previously unreleased demos from the mid '50s, singles and B-sides from the '60s, and other rarities. It makes a great addition to your Cash collection.
Lego Star Wars Save the Galaxy!
We love Legos. We love Star Wars. So this picture-filled book is a no-brainer. It's aimed at younger kids, but geeks of all ages will love the story (basically A New Hope) and illustrations (little blocky characters). It's a great way to get ready for the third Lego Star Wars video game, which is coming out soon. Plus, Darth Vader looks badass, even in this tiny form.
This documentary chronicles Lennon's post-Beatles years in New York City, where he and Yoko Ono lived until he was killed. And it isn't easy on the music legend. It details his drinking, his screwing around, and his general bad behavior while living in Los Angeles after temporarily splitting from Ono. There's also plenty of great music, some of it never heard before.
The Night Digger
Warner Archives (available only online at warnerarchive.com) keeps digging up cool little nuggets from cult movies' past. This 1971 psychological thriller stars Patricia Neal (still recovering from a real-life stroke) as a spinster who cozies up to a guy who you just know is up to no good. There's lots of gothic moodiness and sexual tension to push it along.
