The Fierce Invalids

Impure Thoughts (www.fierceinvalids.com)

The Fierce Invalids' Impure Thoughts is the kind of rock that keeps Cleveland on the map. When done well, slick songs like these wind up on the radio and stay there for 30 years. And the Invalids already qualify as classic rockers: The rhythm section of bassist-writer Gerard Dominick and drummer Tony Rockich has been kicking around for 20 years, most recently with aggressive popsters Strip. Singer-guitarist Jason Burkett fronted the jam band Mojo Honey, and guitarist Rob Janowiak played with singer Connor O'Brien.

The band's self-produced debut is rough; the vocals, melodies, and guitar leads barely hold it together. But it works. The slow rocker "Waste Away" tells the whole story: Torn between a life they can handle and a job that pays, guys in a hard-luck town struggle to find a decent car and a decent bar. The Fierce Invalids could do their part to uphold that tradition, if they'll just think of a better name.
