Spanish is a loving tongue, as the song says. It certainly is when it comes from the mouth of San Antonio native Tish Hinojosa. All it takes is hearing one border love song -- performed in Spanish or English or some of each -- in Hinojosa's honey-drenched voice to know that God was having a great day when he gave this lady her vocal cords. One song might be all that's required to make a newcomer wonder why she hasn't gathered more than a cult following in the 15 years since her first major-label release.
Hinojosa, the 47-year-old daughter of Mexican immigrants, certainly can handle a love song in any language. But romance isn't the lone card in her deck. Through 10 albums of original material, Hinojosa has proven herself deft at country, folk, Americana, western swing, pop, and even cowboy ballads. She's pure Texas, but with roots still firm in the soil of her ancestors. Hinojosa has not released a CD of new stuff in four years (since Sign of Truth), but promises to have that matter corrected by summer.
