Over the past two years, DJ Terry Urban has built a devoted fan base in local nightclubs with his hip-hop sets. But expect the 29-year-old Maple Heights resident to spin more rock and pop tracks when he works the tables at the Corner Alley tonight. Hip-hop used to be about having fun, he says. Now its flooded with bullshit about guns, money, and bitches.
Urban also hosts a pair of prerecorded radio shows every week: He can be heard at 8 p.m. on Saturdays on WENZ-FM 107.9 and on Sirius Radios Hip-Hop Nation Channel 40 at midnight on Mondays.
He finds it a little weird that hes spinning in an upscale bowling alley tonight, since its a far cry from his regular gigs at hip nightspots like Spy and Touch. I normally DJ in clubs with predominantly black folks, he says. At the Corner Alley, I can go from James Blunt to Johnny Cash if I want.
