Sucking the 70s (Small Stone)

If Dogtown and Z-Boys left you jonesin' for some hard-edged '70s rock, but you don't feel like shelling out 18 bucks for the soundtrack only to get 10 songs AOR radio has been playing twice a day for the last 27 years, Sucking the 70s is just what Dr. Gonzo ordered. The double-disc compilation comprises heavy, irony-free stoner rock covers of classic rock radio staples and deep album cuts.

Filled with Sabbathesque, hand-of-doom riffing, the first disc alone is worth the price of admission. Clutch delivers an obsidian take on Jethro Tull's "Cross Eyed Mary." Throttlerod turns in a whomping version of Ram Jam's "Black Betty." The Glasspack's grimy cover of the Stooges' "T.V. Eye" matches the classic horny original. Puny Human contributes an unlisted and irresistible rave-up of the Ramones' "Suzy Is a Headbanger." The Nuge, Zeppelin, and Skynyrd are also represented, and only a small handful of overlong deconstructions on disc two get mired in sludge. Connecting the dots between Mountain and Queens of the Stone Age, this quarry full of FM gold could be more true to the spirit of the originals only if it came on eight-track.
