West Side Scoops

Detroit Road braces for a chilling standoff.

Just in time for your summer slurping pleasure, two of the region's best purveyors of cool 'n' creamy treats are launching new West Side locations.

No doubt custard lovers will be beating a path to the soon-to-open Rosati's Frozen Custard outpost, at 17615 Detroit Avenue in Lakewood (near Beck Center), for heaping helpings of fabulously rich, dense custard. Owners Jim and Marcia Rosati (members of the Honey Hut ice cream dynasty) mounted their first custard campaign in Northfield Center last year, and crowds of satisfied suburbanites have been making pilgrimages to the site (at 95 East Aurora Road) ever since. The Lakewood expansion is the Rosatis' first franchise; more important to custard-heads, it will be an indoor operation, with seating for about 30 and a longer season than that of the walk-up Northfield Center stand. Staffers will whip up batches of vanilla and chocolate custard on-site daily, along with one of about 45 special flavors -- strawberry and Higbee's Chocolate Malted having proved to be particular crowd pleasers.

Meanwhile, just down the street in Rocky River, brothers Pete and Mike Mitchell are adding a third location to their ice cream empire. Unlike the brothers' Solon and Westlake locations, which are tucked into tidy suburban strip malls, the new Mitchell's Homemade Ice Cream shop (19700 Detroit Road, just west of Beachcliff Market Square) will be a free-standing business. At 3,297 square feet, it will also be the largest of the brothers' three sleek, contemporary ice cream parlors, and will come fully equipped with a landscaped, awning-covered patio and a laid-out production kitchen, where all the luscious ice creams, baked goods, and dessert sauces will be crafted.

Both Rosati's Custard and Mitchell's Homemade Ice Cream should be up and running by mid-July.

Thrill of the grill . . . Dad doesn't want a new tie for Father's Day. But poolside grilling, wine-tastings, and cigars? We bet he's down with that. The $75 "Guys Night Out" is the first "Epicurean Event" hosted by the Cleveland Wine School, the newest project for wine authority and party gal Marianne Frantz. It features the grillwork of Fahrenheit chef-owner Rocco Whalen, a wine tour by master sommelier Matt Citriglia, and scotch and cigars provided by Bruce Davis of Diamond Cigars. Guys Night Out takes place at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 22, at the Hilton Cleveland South in Independence. To buy a gift certificate, go to the school's website, www.clevelandwineschool.com, or call 216-295-9583.
