Westside Steve Simmons

Windward Crossing (www.westsidesteve.com)

Westside Steve Simmons made his name as frontman of the Easy Street Band in the '70s and '80s. The group played Midwest party rock in the long shadow of Michael Stanley, but made it as far as Philadelphia International Records. Nowadays Simmons plays acoustic sets at Put-In-Bay taverns, and Windward Crossing plays like an elegant recreation of a Tuesday-night set.

Paul and Peggy Baker, both best known for their work in Bridgid's Cross, add fiddle, bodhrán, and mandolin to Irish folk tunes like "Carrickfergus" and "Roddy McCorley." But a cheap drum machine takes the air out of the traditional "Raglan Road"; the real mistake was thinking he needed the help in the first place.
